No ifs, ands, or butts!

KSFB is working to prevent cigarette litter in Santa Fe!

Cigarette butts remain the most littered item in the U.S. and across the globe. Dropping cigarette butts and cigar tips to the ground, putting them in planters, and disposing of them in waterways is littering.

Littering cigarette butts and cigar tips is unsightly, costly to clean up, and harmful to waterways and wildlife. In fact, 32% of litter at storm drains is tobacco products. Litter traveling through storm drains and water systems, ends up in local streams, rivers, and waterways.

We started by scanning areas around the City, picking up cigarettes, and counting how much litter we found (photos below are from late 2019). Then, we installed cigarette urns in the locations we scanned. These urns will provide safe disposal locations for cigarette butts, and help reduce litter in Santa Fe! (This program was made possible through a grant from Keep American Beautiful).

These urns have been installed in multiple locations around the City.
Who would have thought counting cigarette butts could look like so much fun?
